These small devices are called the “THING” of the Internet of Things and this environment comprises 4 components called Devices/Sensors, Connectivity, Data processing, and UI is also known as the Core of the Internet of Thing.

Sensors/Devices

The sensors or devices will collect the data from their environment. This could be something like a temperature reading or even a full video feed.

At times, even multiple sensors can be bundled together or they can be part of a device. Your smartphone device can carry multiple sensors such as a camera, accelerometer, GPS, etc. It can be a standalone or full device but the very initial step is of collecting data from the environment.

Connectivity

This will require connecting to the cloud on behalf of cellular, satellite, WiFi, Bluetooth, low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN), or you can connect directly to the internet using ethernet.

There is a tradeoff between power consumption, range, and bandwidth so selecting the best connectivity option is subjected to specific IoT applications, but they all do the same job of getting data to the cloud.

Data processing

After the data reached the cloud some software is used to do some type of processing on it. It could be easy or complex such as using computer vision on video for identifying objects and patterns.

User Interface

Make the information useful to the end-user in the best possible way. This is possible through an alert to the user in form of email, text, notification, etc.
